When it comes to working with animals, a love for these furry friends may be a great starting point but there are some big questions that you should ask yourself before choosing a career with animals.
So whether you are just starting out in the job market or are thinking about making a career change, ask yourselves these four questions - you want to make sure that you are making the right decision for the right reasons!
1. How passionate are you about this field of work?Often a career working with animals might appear glamorous but in reality it may not be quite so. Ask yourself how passionate you are about this particular line of work because, at times, it could be dirty and tiring. It’s worth doing adequate research into this career path before settling on a decision. You don’t want to invest time, money and effort into a career that you’re not that fussed with.
2. Do you have the required level of training? For candidates to find employment, some animal career paths require degrees, certifications, internships, or other professional qualifications. In order to get these prerequisites, it can take a lot of time (and money!). The time spent in training may also involve hands-on learning where you have to spend a significant amount of time as an unpaid apprentice.
3. What does career progression look like?In an ideal world, you’ll be looking at a career with strong job prospects. Find out what you are getting yourself into and research career progression. For instance in animal care you might start as a Veterinary Assistant and then work your way up to a Veterinary Nurse or Veterinary Technician.
4. Is the salary what you’re hoping for?As with many career paths, starting salaries can be tough. This is especially true in the animal industry. Zookeepers for instance might get to see exotic animals everyday but their salary is fairly low. It’s true that dream jobs don’t always come with dream salaries, however like many other careers, as you gain more experience, salaries tend to increase.
