Hello Students,

I hope you are having a fantastic day! Today I want to share with you some information on dietary FIBRE!

When I speak to most students, they can tell me one thing about fibre.. it keeps you regular. Yet there is SO much more to know about it. Lets dive in now:

Fiber is a unique type of carbohydrate. It is not digested or absorbed, so—unlike other carbohydrates – it does not give the body energy. It is otherwise known as the indigestible carbohydrate or the structural parts of plant derived foods. Yet, it also has many health promoting features. Dietary fibre aids to feed the trillions of intestinal bacteria in our large intestine and is something our body requires for proper gut functioning. Unlike the rest of the food that we consume, it is resistant to absorption in the small intestine and instead is digested and fermented by bacterial enzymes. It really does help the health of our gut. Earth's goodies.

Did you know that new evidence also shows that there is a link between high fibre diets a healthy heart and decreased risk of disease? It has also been proven to be effective in improving mental health. Amazing!

So what contains fibre, you ask?

Fiber is found in plant foods: fruits, beans, legumes, grains, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

There are two types of fibre;

● Soluble fibre- Aids to slow digestion and swells in the digestive tract, this helps to sweep the inside of the intestines and keep our gut healthy. E.g. Barley, legumes, oats and citrus fruits.

Insoluble fibre - Is known for adding bulk to your stools (faeces) and regulates your bowel movements, it prevents constipation and any intestinal blockages. . Eg. Wholegrains, vegetables, E.g. nuts, wheat bran, fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, seeds

Fibre also keeps you feeling fuller for longer and helps to create balance in our digestive system by keeping it running smoothly.

In summary, it's kind of a big deal. Get some fibre on your fork (half a plate with every meal if you can).

Have a lovely day nutrition lovers,

Warm Regards,
