More than one-quarter of a million people (282,000) were using residential care (permanent or respite), home care or transition care services in Australia on 30 June 2018. In addition, in 2017–18 more than 783,000 people were assisted in their home under the Commonwealth Home Support Program. This is a growing industry with considerable job opportunities across Australia.
There are plenty of care providers in Australia that offer training as part of the role, but you’ll often find there is a lot of competition for this kind of position. The good news is that if you are finding these kinds of opportunities hard to come by, you can get the required aged care training online, which can really open up the field for you.
Once you’re certain that aged care is for you, you can then use aged care courses to give you the requisite knowledge and skills. A great way to do this is to engage in an Aged Care Advanced Certificate which, once completed, will allow you to apply for roles in a variety of aged care positions.
Passing this aged care training online will result in you being awarded an OCA Certificate of Achievement in Advanced Aged Care. This is an industry-recognised award that will illustrate to employers that you are fully trained and officially qualified to work in aged care.

The Home Care Packages Program The Home Care Packages Program is part of the Australian Government funding a continuum of care for older people in Australia from home support through to residential aged care.
The Home Care Packages Program provides four levels of support:
• Home Care Level 1 – basic care needs
• Home Care Level 2 – low level care needs
• Home Care Level 3 – intermediate care needs
• Home Care 4 – high care needs Approved providers work with each of their clients to select services that best meet each person’s care needs and goals. Home care package recipients are not limited to a basic list of services and funds can be used to purchase a wide range of services including:
• Clinical care, such as nursing, allied health and physiotherapy for mobility and strength;
• Support services, such as help around the home, visiting the doctor and attending social activities;
• Personal care, such as help with showering, dressing and moving around the home; and
• Nutrition such as assistance with preparing meals, including special diets for health, assistance with using eating utensils and assistance with feeding.
• Home care providers can sub-contract out services to meet the person’s needs if they are not able to provide a specific service.
The tailoring of each package of services to the client’s needs is done according to the principles of Consumer Directed Care (CDC). CDC gives clients more choice and flexibility when selecting care and services, including a say in how the funding for their package is spent.
Individuals approved for a home care package are placed on a national queue until a package becomes available and is assigned to them. Clients may be expected to contribute to the cost of their care based on their income/pension.
