Being nearly two weeks into the first month of 2016, everyone slowly starts stumbling back into their offices and classes with a grouchy face and a case of the post-holiday scatter feeling. It’s one of the hardest things about starting a new year. You’ve been on holiday, been eating too much and probably had a few sneaky beverages, but sooner or later you have to face reality again. So, how do you get back into the ease of things? Here are a few tips that could help you out.

Ease Your Way Into Routine

Don’t take on too much too quickly because you’ll start to feel overwhelmed. Not only will you get stressed, but it'll affect your mental and physical health as well as your work. Take things slowly and focus on a few key tasks rather than doing everything at once. Simple things like creating to-do lists and organising your calender can help you see your work in a visual perspective. Once you start ticking things off that list, you will slowly get back into the gist of things.

Take On New Healthy Habits

Does your New Year resolution involve exercise? Start now instead of putting it off for another month..and then another year! By starting your resolution, you’ll feel happier and are more likely to get into routine easier. Getting those endorphins pumping will help your mood and will put you in the right mind frame to become healthier and get your focus levels right where they belong. Conquer those post holiday blues with a good cardio session and you’ll feel ready to go!

A Catch Up

A 15 minute coffee with a close friend or family member can instantly lift your mood - especially if you had some fun with them over the festive season.It's proven that plans with a good friend/family member can give your brain a rush of energy that'll help you stress less through out the day. A catch up also allows you to have a giggle and reminisce about Aunty Kate's crazy Christmas sweater and all the other moments that stood out during the break. Having someone to talk to who is also going through the post holiday blues will make you realise that you're not the only one and a lot of people are actually in the same boat. It's not the end of the world even if that 6am wake up feels like it!

Don’t Dwell!

The worst thing you can do when you’re trying to get back into work or studies is to dwell on the good times. Just know that you have fun and the festive season will be back before you know it. Talk to your colleagues and classmates about the fun things you got up to and invite them for a coffee so you can use it as a distraction from being sad and crying under your desk. Move on by interacting with others and getting your work done in an efficient way. Start a new project, learn something new or even change your career in 2016! The possibilities are truly endless. 

Remember: Post Holiday Blues Will Eventually Go Away

The blues are only temporary and will go away before you know it. Give it a good week to get your feet on the ground and you’ll be back in the zone with your usual drive! Make those to-do lists, interact with coworkers/classmates and get excited for the new year that’s ahead of you!
