Given some thought as to what you want to do professionally after you complete your makeup course? Not sure which particular avenue to pursue once qualified? If so, then becoming a beauty therapist is a role you should consider and to help, we’ll be looking at what the role is like in the real world.

Is Being A Beautician A Good Career?

With your makeup kit in hand, working as a beauty therapist (a.k.a. beautician) is a career path with almost limitless possibilities. You can work in fashion, TV & film, high-end salons, spas, or retail. Whether entered as part of a career change or straight out of school, it’s a profession that offers a lot.

What's The Future Of The Cosmetics Industry Look Like?

Whether you train in makeup via free online courses or at university, you get to enjoy a wealth of opportunities in an industry that’s got a bright future. The cosmetics industry is booming, and over the next 5 years in Australia alone, there are expected to be 25,000 new jobs opening up in Australia alone.

Beauty therapists can be found working right the way across Australia, which means that once you’re qualified, you’re never going to be short of work.

So What Does a Usual Day Look Like For a Beauty Therapist?

After taking the required makeup course to become a beauty therapist, you’ll be offering a wide range of treatments from waxing to facials to pedicures to Indian head massages. As such, no two days are ever quite the same, but here are some of your day-to-day responsibilities:

  • Monitoring online makeup demo videos to remain up to date
  • Dealing with phone calls & managing client bookings
  • Maintaining your makeup kit and keeping it clean
  • Keeping your salon nice and tidy for customers
  • Discussing beauty needs with clients
  • Advising clients on the best treatments
  • Order required supplies
  • Maintain records

Your day will be busy but satisfying as each customer leaves happy with what you’ve done for them. This applies whether plying your trade on a cruise ship, in a spa, hotel or standard salon.

And How Much Do Beauty Therapists Earn?

Honestly, to begin with, your earnings will be on the modest side, with average salaries coming in at around $33,800 a year. However, as you become more experienced and add to your skills with makeup course training, you’ll see that figure rise up to around $70,000 a year.

If you’re serious about the career and have the passion in your belly, then you’re already halfway there in this industry. With lots of diverse opportunities and even the ability to go freelance and be your own boss, it’s a profession that can take you wherever you want.
