The Work Safely in the Construction Industry (White Card) Queensland course will provide initial basic health and safety education to anyone working within the building and construction industry.
To work in the construction industry in Queensland you must first successfully complete a general safety induction course recognised by Queensland law. This is known as the White Card. Under Queensland health and safety laws, any person entering onto a construction site or performing construction work in Queensland must have successfully completed this course before they enter or commence work in any construction activity.
*There is a penalty imposed for permitting a person to work at a construction site without a White Card.
The aim of the General Safety Induction (White Card) is to provide initial basic health and safety education to all persons working within the building and construction industry.
OCA offers this course online, saving you time and money. Upon successful completion you will be issued with a White Card which will be mailed out to you within two working days.

Course Delivery
This course is delivered online. Upon enrolment students are issued with a login and password, providing access to OCA's e-learning centre.
Upon completion of this course you will be issued with a Queensland White Card that is valid for use within Queensland.
Please Note: Due to current legislation changes the Queensland White Card is now recognised as proof of general health and safety induction training for construction work in New South Wales and Victoria. Alternatively, if you currently hold a valid New South Wales Green/White Card or Victoria Red Card, these are now recognised in New South Wales.

Recognition and Accreditation
This course leads to the awarding of your White Card valid for use in Queensland.

Candidates are required to provide proof of identification for this course.

The White Card course is intended to provide new and existing building and construction industry workers with the introductory understanding and knowledge needed to commence or continue within the building and construction industry.
Queensland and Western Australia
Both Queensland and Western Australia recognise this course as
meeting the mandatory training requirements for all construction
workers to complete a Safety Induction course
prior to entering a work-site.
Victoria, New South Wales and South
Australia
Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia do not recognise
online training of this course
Northern Territory, Australian Capital Territory and
Tasmania
Northern Territory, Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania have
mandatory training requirements in duty of care and occupational
safety but have not decided on a mandatory course requirement at
this stage.

Course Content
The course consists of the training unit CPCCOHS1001A Work Safely in the Construction Industry (White Card). This competency based unit relates directly to the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work (ASCC 2006).
The course will equip you with the skill and knowledge to:
- Identify OHS legislative requirements.
- Identify construction hazards and control measures.
- Identify OHS communication and reporting processes.
- Identify OHS incident response procedures.
Objectives
Apply basic risk management concepts when working on a building and construction site:
Section 1: covers how to identify workplace health and safety (WH&S) requirements.
Section 2: provides training on how to identify construction hazards and control measures.
Section 3: will teach you how to identify WH&S communications and reporting processes.
Section 4: deals with incident response procedures.
These sections include:
- Identify the hazards commonly present in the building and construction industry.
- Apply basic hazard identification techniques.
- Perform basic risk assessment.
- Determine control measures according to the hierarchy of control measures.
- Identify the reasons for monitoring and reviewing the control measures.
Prepare for and use safe work practices when working on a building and construction site:
- Comply with the Principal Contractor Workplace Plan.
- Interpret and apply the Work Method Statement as required.
- Interpret and apply Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) as required.
- Follow basic emergency procedures.
- Identify fire fighting equipment according to type of fire.
- Report hazards and potential workplace incidents.
Interpret and comply with relevant workplace health and safety obligations and Common Law when working on a building and construction site:
- Identify rights, responsibilities and enforcement provisions in Workplace Health and Safety Legislation
- Workplace Health and Safety Act (1995)
- Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008 and codes of practice
- Determine duty of care under Common Law
- Determine the roles of the relevant personnel at the workplace
- Define the events that must be recorded at the workplace
Participants will acquire knowledge in emergency procedures, physical building and construction hazards, risk management, personal protective equipment and appropriate legislative requirements.

How Long Does The Course Take?
This short course should take approximately 2-6 hours.
If you conduct this course face to face it would take approximately six hours. Online, it can be much quicker. The exact time it takes to complete the unit depends on your skill level, your previous experience within the construction industry and your level of computer literacy.
